All the artefacts that were uncovered during the excavations at Watchfield were deposited with the Oxfordshire Museum Services. They have a Museum Resource Centre at Standlake and it was here that I was kindly shown various objects by David Moon, the Curator of Archaeology at the unit. Above and below. Various buckles and brooches, some beautifully enamelled and gold-plated.
Above and below. In one of the Watchfield graves was found this high quality sword which had been made by the Saxon method of pattern-welding. Above is the original and below is a reconstrucion of the same sword. As well as being much stronger, pattern-welding also produces the extraordinary decoration seen below.
